As Hokkaido is a separate island from the rest of Japan, travelling to Sapporo by air is a common option. However, if you are concerned about your carbon footprint, and would like to see more of Japan, then the awesome bullet-train Shinkansen takes you all the way to southern Hokkaido, from where you can switch over to a regular express train for the final leg. For those of you flying in, we highly advise taking the JR Rapid Airport Line, departing every 15 minutes, for a 40-minute journey from the airport to Sapporo Station (city centre). Hokkaido University (Sapporo campus) is located near Sapporo Station.
Sapporo has three subway lines covering most areas, with some buses running regularly. Besides, Sapporo's roads are wide and flat, cycling is also a great choice during the summer, but please wear helmets for safety
As a tourist city, Sapporo has an abundance of accommodations. Summer is not peak season, so it is easy to book hotels at reasonable prices. We recommend staying near Sapporo Station, which is conveniently located and has many hotels as well as restaurants and shopping venues.
